RB / RB-S (Rubber Bearing / Rubber Bearing Square type)
Base Isolation System Using Multilayer Natural Rubber

Provides high performance seismic isolation combined with various dampers.
AdvantagesStructureBasic FeaturesFunction

Advantages

Wide range of bearing capacity (about 100 - 2000 tons/unit)
Natural rubber provides high durability and reliability with stable performance and little variation in the mechanical characteristics.
RB and RB-S can be combined with a variety of isolation systems or dampers such as LRB or BMD.
Stability is provided in all horizontal directions and capacity for large deformations is also provided.
A smaller bearing can be made with the same characteristics as a round RB, saving space and reducing cost.

Structure

RB/RB-S is an isolation system with multilayer natural rubber construction which provides load support and vibration isolation.
Compact design saves installation space.

Structures

Basic Features

This chart shows the relationship between force and displacement when RB/RB-S is subjected to major deformation as would be expected during a major earthquake.
Restoring force of RB/RB-S is shown as a straight line. This characteristic makes structural analysis relatively simple.

Function

Function of multilayer rubber isolator

1) Load supporting function
Rubber reinforced with steel plates provides stable support for structures.
Multilayer construction provides better vertical rigidity than single layer rubber pads for supporting a building.

Load Support

2) Horizontal elasticity function (prolonged oscillation period )
Earthquake vibration is converted to low speed motion.
As horizontal stiffness of the multi-layer rubber bearing is low, strong earthquake vibration is alleviated and the oscillation period of the building is increased.

Prolonged oscillation period

3) Restoration function
Horizontal elasticity returns the building to its original position.
After an earthquake the restoring force of the rubber layers returns the building to the original position.
