ACTUAL DATASeismic Isolation and Vibration Control For Bridges and Buildings
Record of seismic response observed in buildings with seismic isolation during the Great Hanshin Earthquake
The figure shows a record of the seismic response observed in two wings of a seismic isolated building in Kobe city.
This building is located about 30 km away from the epicentre and was struck by a quake with a seismic intensity of 6.
In the affected region (Kobe district), this was the only seismic isolated building.

Buildings with seismic isolation in devastated region - 1

Observations indicate that the response value for each floor was reduced to one third or one fourth of the earthquake input (horizontal direction: east-west 300 Gal, north-south 263 Gal). It is proposed that earthquake input would be amplified to over 1,000 Gal on the upper floors in this buildings without an isolation system. These results show that seismic response values were reduced to below one tenth of the maximum compared with buildings without seismic isolation. This data demonstrated that LRB provides excellent performance and protects the function and facilities of buildings from damage and buildings with seismic isolation provide a safe environment.

Buildings isolated at the foundation in devastated region - 2

This building in the same district has eight high damping rubber isolators, each 700 mm in diameter. The response value of this
building is reduced to about one half of the earthquake input (about 270 Gal).
